the Shaker tree of life

Early Shakers expressed religious imagination through whimsical illustrations.

Little is known about these works called “spirit drawings” yet they have become well-loved examples of American folk art.

Perhaps the best known of all Shaker Drawings is the Tree of Life, an 1854 work of Hannah Cohoon, a shaker sister from Hancock Village, Massachusetts.

This colorful image, its branches laden with red and green spheres, came to Hannah in a dream. To her, it represented the abundant fruits of spiritual labor. Today it is widely used to symbolize the simple integrity of Shaker heritage.
